Getting Around in Koh Samui: Transportation Options for Island Adventures

0

When you visit Koh Samui, sticking to a single location isn’t an option with so many sites, attractions and marvels to visit. It’s more than likely that you’ll need to move around to make the most of your stay and enjoy the best the island has to offer. If you aren’t sure of the best way to get around, here are some of the popular modes of transportation that you can use to travel around Koh Samui.

Songthaews

These vehicles resemble pickup trucks and feature a roof over 2 benches that are attached at the back. Each vehicle will have its destination painted in the front so you’ll need to flag down the right one based on where you want to go. These are the cheapest method of transport and are the closest version to a bus system in Koh Samui.

Taxis

If you prefer a more comfortable ride you can use the island’s taxis that are operated by a single company. They are easy to identify as they feature a uniform design of yellow and maroon. You’ll likely need to negotiate a fixed price with your driver and the costs will be higher than other transport options.

Motorbike Rentals

This is another economical option for travel, especially if you prefer to travel independently at your own pace. You’ll need to have an international driving permit to legally drive a bike in Thailand. However, you’ll need to check other factors like insurance coverage before purchasing a rental.

Bicycle Rentals

This is an eco-friendly way of getting around the island and is perfect if you’re feeling energetic. It is also one of the cheaper ways of getting around and is an ideal option if you plan to visit some of the more scenic areas in Koh Samui. However, you’ll need to be careful when navigating the hilly areas and smaller, lesser-maintained roads. If you are staying at a beachfront villa in Koh Samui such as the Sino-Thai-inspired Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, renting out a bicycle may be the best option when travelling to and from the property.

Car Rentals

Renting a car is one of the more safer options in Koh Samui although it can cost more than other rental options. There are several recognised rental brands that you can choose from including Hertz, Budget Car Rentals and Avis. As with a motorbike, you’ll need a Thai or international driver’s license to drive a rental car.
