The Location and Tickets
The museum can be easily accessed from any luxury hotel in Colombo as it is located in Colombo 7, in the heart of the city. If you’re staying at properties like Cinnamon Grand Colombo, it’s only a 5–10-minute ride for you. The place stays open from 9 am to 5 pm but is closed on all public holidays. Architecture and Construction
The Museum was first established in 1877 by the British governor of Ceylon at that time, Sir William Henry Gregory. The building has an Italian style to it and was designed by the famous PWD architect J. G. Smither. The construction was done under the supervision of Wapchie Marikar, who also influenced the Old Town Hall, Clock Tower, and General Post Office construction in Colombo.
Historical Significance
You can find many artefacts with historical significance here, while the crown jewel and the throne of the last King of Ceylon take centre stage. Masks, puppets, books, paintings, fossils, and animal specimens are displayed here in large halls. You will also find many artefacts related to the ancient Ceylonian kingdoms.
