Hong Kong has a steep history full of victories and downfalls, as plenty of museums can attest. But to get a truly immersive experience of the past, the Hong Kong heritage trails offer several relics along its routes that you can engross yourself in. Here are some of the best ones.

Shing Mun War Relics Trail

This trail contains in its wake, remnants of the darkest part of human history; World War II. Located on the northern side of Smuggler’s Route, it has a myriad of trenches that were dug by the British to defend against the Japanese invasion during wartime. The tunnels are aptly named after London streets, most likely a means of giving a comforting feeling to the soldiers during their darkest hours. The efficient railway system ensures that you can visit this location from your Hong Kong deluxe hotel stay at a property of Hong Kong Hotels Wan Chai in about an hour.

Ping Shan Heritage Trail

Established in 1993, it is a relatively short trail of about 1.6 km, but along it lies immense cultural value. The route follows the villages of the Tang Clan, an ancient settlement from the 12th Century. Visitors can observe the ancient Tsui Shing Lau Pagoda and the fortified village of Sheung Cheung Wai, a beautiful glimpse into the past.

This trail spans 2.6km and was opened in 1999, with the name Lung Yeuk inherited from a legend about a dragon leaping across the neighbouring mountains. The trail is surrounded by many ancient Chinese buildings because it is between the Five Wais (walled villages) and Six Tsuens (villages).
